Freelance

Borrowed photography books yesterday. One of the books that I borrowed is “Photos That Sells – The art of successful freelance photography”. Quite amazed by it. Below are the breakdown of how much you earn per picture (taken by a skilled photographers).

Magazine market – Pays about USD 700.00 for a full page for magazines that freelances can usually sell pictures to. Cover pictures generate higher fees. Average is around USD 1800.00 to for hobbyist-type magazines. But the editor of a small-circulation title may only offer USD 1000.00, while a market leader may pay USD 3000.00-plus.
Calendar publishing – Paid for calendar rights vary from around USD 450.00 to USD 1100.00, with USD 600.00 being about the average. This is per image, for calendar rights for a single year.
Picture postcards – About USD 600.00 to USD 700.00 per shot seems to be the range for touristy postcards, though you may be offered by upmarket publishers of “art” cards. This is usually for exclusive postcard rights for five year, either specific to one country or worldwide.
Greeting cards – Payment varies, but USD 700.00 is a good average to expect for greeting card world rights for three to five years.
Local business – This really depends on who uses the pictures and what they’re used for. A small business requiring shots for leaflet may offer USD 450.00 per image, whereas a design agency putting together a high-quality corporate report should pay two or three times that amount, and USD 8000.00-plus is not uncommon if you supply all the pictures for a corporate calendar.
Book publishers – The advance offered could be anything from USD 5000.00 to USD 20000.00, depending on the publisher and the size and/or type of project. Royalties are offered as a percentage either of the book’s cover price or the publisher’s receipts – the money they actually receive from the sale of the book. This tends to be around 7.5 – 10 percent for the former and 10 – 15 percent for the latter.
Newspapers – Fees from local newspaper are generally very small, if anything at is offered. National newspapers – especially tabloids – can be extremely lucrative, however, with fees running into hundreds of dollars for anything remotely interesting. If you capture a major even on film, that would be increased a hundredfold, while really sensational pictures can, literally, turn you into a millionaire overnight.

Good money, right? *Hmmm* How much will my photos be? Bid for it please. In Singapore dollars. I don’t think my photos will go more than hundred dollars. For those photos that are filed under “Not taken from my camera”, “Taken from magazines or internet” are not in the auction. Cos they are not taken by yours truly. *Laughs* I still need to improve my skills.

I think I need to throw away my DMK heels. Cos it is beyond wearable usage. *Laughs* That left with Charles and Keith heels to wear. And wearing it too long, will make my leg pains. I still prefer Crocs shoes. And I am falling sick. Heal me, Lord.

Thinking of taking leave on 21 and 24 December. But EN is taking leave on 24 December. That means KA can’t take her Hari Raya Haji leave. Maybe I just take 24 and 31 December leave instead.

Today work until I got so confused. WH’s shipments, new customers shipments, SM’s shipments. All the initials are company’s names and it the name is changed. Not revealing the actual name of the company.
